The log in process does not apply to standalone versions of Epic such as the demo.
The log in process identifies you, the user, to Epic, so that your activities and preferences can be applied. It is the first window that Epic displays on start-up. You are identified by your unique username and authenticated via your password. You have three attempts to enter the correct password otherwise Epic shuts down.
The default log-in window also requires you to specify the connection to Epic's server where the database resides:

All these settings will be given to you by your administrator. However as these are fairly technical and are unlikely to change Epic offers the option record one or more sets of these, via the 'Log On Options' of your preferences (note that these are the only preferences that are recorded on the computer and not stored centrally):
